Team Leader Civil Engineering

Richard Heijdra: "Listening and thinking along with colleagues"

"Diverse" is the keyword to describe Richard Heijdra's function within SU Business. "The civil engineering projects on which I'm working provide diversity, but leading the group also makes my work highly interesting," says Richard.

After two studies at intermediate technical level (Civil Engineering and Energy) and a transition course in mathematics and natural science, Richard studied Civil Engineering at college level in his free time. Thus, he climbed up from Job Planner via Chief Assistant to Team Leader – Civil Engineering.

"The main difference between the two latter positions is really managing your team. This also includes job appraisal interviews, steering your team members, and monitoring processes. Good communicative skills are indispensable for a Team Leader. There are often differences between what people are saying and what they actually mean. So you must be able to listen and think along with your colleagues."

Civil Engineering is practically always concerned with contractor services, "This means that my job involves a lot of administrative work. Real engineers don't like this, but you soon grow accustomed to it."
